Back to back to back to back losses was bad enough. Worse still Sunday's defeat to the Los Angeles Rams put every one of the Raiders' glaring weakness on film.
Here is how each unit graded out after Sunday’s game.
Quarterback: C-
The box score flatters Kirk Cousins, who threw two touchdowns without an interception. Both came after the offense managed two field goals through three quarters, and the veteran's failed fourth-down throws from the Rams' 13- and 25-yard lines erased two field-goal chances.
After a dismal 3-for-14 day on third down, only clean ball security keeps him out of D range.
Running backs: D+
No position group has drifted further from its preseason billing. Second-year running back Ashton Jeanty ran eight times for 15 yards and is averaging barely 3 yards a carry
this season.
Rookie Mike Washington Jr. netted 6 yards outside of one 21-yard burst. Jeanty's eight catches and a receiving touchdown save the room from an F, but nobody drafts a back that high to be a safety valve.
Receivers and tight ends: C+
Without Tre Tucker, this grade would be pretty ugly. The speedy wide receiver turned five catches into 103 yards and a touchdown, while the other wideouts were close to invisible with three catches for 18 yards.
Tight ends Brock Bowers (six catches, 73 yards) and Michael Mayer (3 for 3, 32 yards) were dependable, and their strong day meets a failing wideout day in the middle.
Offensive line: D+
The Raiders are still waiting for a front five that can run block. Cousins went down only twice, but the run blocking produced just two rushing first downs, even with guard Caleb Rogers starting over Jackson Powers-Johnson for a second straight week.
Defense: D
Rams quarterback Matthew Staffordnever needed to throw deep, completing 79.3% of his passes with a long of 15 yards. Los Angeles scored four first-half touchdowns, ran for 199 yards at 5.2 per carry and piled up 28 first downs.
Linebacker Quay Walker made 12 tackles, and takeaways from defensive tackle JJ Pegues and linebacker Nakobe Dean kept the grade off the floor. One sack against a 38-year-old quarterback is stunning for a front built around edge rusher Maxx Crosby.
Special teams: B
Special teams gave the Raiders their steadiest afternoon, as punter AJ Cole averaged 56.0 yards and completed a 13-yard pass on a fake. Running back Dylan Laube averaged 39.0 yards on kickoff returns, and kicker Matt Gay's 51-yard miss was only his second of the season.
A failed onside kick keeps a solid day at a B.
Coaching: D
Klint Kubiak's afternoon went sideways from the opening coin toss. The coach took the ball after winning it, the offense went three-and-out, and the Raiders trailed 28-3 before a late first-half field goal.
The plan then tilted to 44 passes and 17 runs. A scoreless third quarter counts as progress, but 2 for 5 on fourth down and 0 for 2 on two-point tries show the big calls kept failing.
