David Olano has quietly become one of the most consistent players on Texas A&M’s roster through the first half of the season.
The Aggies struggled to finish drives during Saturday’s 27-6 loss to Missouri, but Olano took advantage of both opportunities he received. He connected from 53 yards in the first quarter before adding a 27-yard field goal during the fourth. Those kicks accounted for all six of A&M’s points and kept Olano perfect through six games. He has made all nine of his field-goal attempts this season while also converting each of his 19 extra-point attempts.
Olano has connected twice in three consecutive games, beginning with the loss at LSU. He followed that performance by making both attempts against Arkansas, including a 52-yarder,
and then delivered another kick from beyond 50 yards at Missouri.
His consistency has been one of the few things A&M has not needed to worry about. The offense has struggled to sustain drives and reach the end zone against SEC competition, making it even more important for Olano to turn limited scoring opportunities into points.
Olano is the first Texas A&M kicker to make his first nine field-goal attempts in a season since Todd Pegram opened the 2004 campaign by converting 12 straight. His range has also given the Aggies another option when drives stall outside the red zone.
A&M would certainly prefer to finish more of those possessions with touchdowns, but Olano has done everything asked of him through the first six games. While several areas of the team remain inconsistent, the Aggies can trust their kicker whenever they get within scoring range.
