Texas A&M kicked off the 2026 regular season against Missouri State on Saturday night, and while starting the season off 1-0 was fully expected, one of third-year coach Mike Elko's remaining challenges that has haunted the program for 20-plus seasons resurfaced this week before the season opener, as ESPN's College GameDay's nine appearances in College Station have been disastrous.
Since 2000, Texas A&M is just 1-8 when College GameDay made its way to College Station, with the first loss coming against No. 1 Oklahoma 35-31, while the only win came during the 2016 season when the Aggies defeated visiting Tennessee 45-38 in double overtime, which happens to be one of the most exciting finishes in recent memory.
Since that victory, the Jimbo Fisher
era has been equally disappointing after six seasons, while the lone College GameDay loss to Clemson during Fisher's first season at the helm was a game that could, and should have, gone the other way if it weren't for several avoidable performances.
During Mike Elko's inaugural season, Texas A&M's loss to rival Texas at the end of the 2024 season wasn't a shock given the talent differential, while the Aggies' first-round loss to Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff was by far the most disappointing defeat with College GameDay in town.
When the lights are brightest, Texas A&M must respond if the Aggies want to be taken seriously as a program truly building and contending for national titles, and while the 2025 season was certainly a solid start, expectations are even higher in 2026. If College GameDay makes its way back to College Station, it's time to change the narrative.
