Texas A&M’s secondary was supposed to be one of this team's strengths. Instead, it has become one of the biggest questions after back-to-back losses to Kentucky and LSU. Receivers have found too much room, and the Aggies have allowed big plays that made it difficult to get off the field when they needed a stop.
The pass rush has not done the defensive backs many favors, but that does not excuse the coverage breakdowns. Too often, opposing quarterbacks have had both time to throw and an open receiver waiting downfield. A&M cannot keep giving up those opportunities and expect its struggling offense to make up the difference.
Arkansas gives the Aggies another chance to respond, but the secondary has to show more than it has over the past two weeks.
If Texas A&M is going to right the ship at Kyle Field, keeping receivers covered and limiting explosive plays will be key. That makes the secondary this week’s X-factor.
Why the secondary is the X-factor
Former Texas A&M wide receiver Chris Marshall should have the secondary’s full attention. He caught nine passes for 195 yards and a touchdown against Tulsa after producing 136 receiving yards against Georgia. Through four games, he has 28 catches for 473 yards and leads the SEC in receiving yards. His production against Georgia also shows this is more than one big afternoon against a weaker opponent.
What Texas A&M needs from the group
- Keep Marshall from taking over the passing game.
- Communicate through formations and motion.
- Stay disciplined instead of biting on the first move.
- Tackle after the catch and limit extra yards.
- Force Jackson to earn completions into tighter coverage.
The secondary does not have to shut Arkansas out, but it has to make the Razorbacks work for their points. A&M’s offense has enough problems without needing to answer another string of quick touchdown drives.
This defense still has time to look like the unit fans expected. Saturday would be a good place to start.
