Texas A&M had a rough day in the office on Saturday, losing 31-21 at home to Kentucky, and if you believe in signs, the opening kickoff signaled how the game would go.
Wide receiver Terry Bussey was injured while returning the opening kickoff after appearing to slip awkwardly on his right leg. He was helped onto a cart and taken to the locker room before returning to the sideline in street clothes during the second quarter.
Head coach Mike Elko did not provide a specific diagnosis after the game, but his initial update did not sound encouraging.
“That’s probably going to be a long one, We’ll hold a little bit on that one until Monday, but there’s no signs that indicate that it’s good right now.”
Freshman running back KJ Edwards also went down during
the game. Elko said the coaching staff planned to give Edwards more opportunities against Kentuckybefore the injury prevented it. However, he did not provide an update on the injury's severity or whether it could affect Edwards beyond Saturday.
Edwards made the most of his limited workload before leaving, rushing five times for 28 yards and catching two passes for six yards. His 5.6 yards per carry led Texas A&M’s running backs and continued to make a strong case for a larger role in the offense.
The injuries further reduced an Aggies offense that entered the game without running back Jamarion Morrow and wide receiver Ashton Bethel-Roman. Both players were ruled out after being listed as doubtful on Friday’s SEC availability report.
Texas A&M should provide more information on Bussey and Edwards when Elko meets with reporters Monday. Bussey’s status appears more concerning, but both will be important to monitor as the Aggies prepare for LSU.
