Texas A&M men's basketball entered the 2026-27 season with a revamped roster, and head coach Bucky McMillan's offseason additions wasted little time making an impact.
The Aggies opened their season Tuesday night with a 97-66win over Alabama State at Reed Arena, with four transfers accounting for nearly two-thirds of the team's scoring. Kansas State transfer PJ Haggerty led the way with 22 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the field. The former Big 12 standout arrived in College Station after averaging 23.4 points per game last season, giving McMillan a proven scoring threat.
Former Texas guard Jordan Pope added 17 points, providing another experienced offensive weapon. Pope's arrival was one of the Aggies' biggest offseason additions, and his debut
offered an encouraging look at what he brings to the backcourt.
Jalen Shelley, who transferred from Loyola Marymount, delivered one of the night's most complete performances. The sophomore forward finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, recording a double-double in his first game wearing the Maroon & White. McNeese transfer Tyshawn Archie contributed 11 points, giving Texas A&M another double-digit scorer from its incoming transfer class.
The newcomers' production was especially important for a team that returned just five players from last season's roster. McMillan brought in seven transfers as part of an offseason overhaul designed to build on his successful first year. While tougher competition awaits, Tuesday's opener offered an encouraging first look at how quickly the Aggies' new pieces can contribute.
If the transfers continue producing at this level, Texas A&M could have the offensive depth needed to compete in another demanding SEC season.
