Texas A&M's 50-0 shutout win over Missouri State to open the 2026 season was a tale of two halves, as the revamped Aggie offensive line struggled during the first two quarters, allowing multiple sacks and pressures, but looked much better after halftime, paving the way for 236 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the night.
Compared to last season, junior running back Rueben Owens's contact balance issues were, at first glance, a thing of the past, leading the Aggies with 77 yards on 17 carries and 49 snaps, while sophomore Jamarion Morrow's versatility was on full display, rushing for his first touchdown of the season. However, it was the play of freshman backs KJ Edwards and Carsyn Baker that truly stood out.
Edwards (5 carries, 44 yards, 8.8
YPC) and Carsyn Baker (7 carries, 52 yards, 7.4 YPC) combined for 22 snaps and looked explosive on nearly every run, especially Baker, whose balance and physical running style led coach Mike Elko to state the obvious after the game, feeling that, no matter Rueben Owens' experience, getting both young players on the field is just smart coaching.
"Those two kids are going to play a lot. They will play much more meaningful reps (going forward)."
With the new 5-for-5 rule taking effect this season, most coaches are now forced to play their younger players, but for Mike Elko, Texas A&M's chances of making it back to the College Football Playoff will hinge on a strong running game and starting quarterback Marcel Reed, who completed 21/30 for 233 yards and 2 touchdowns, continuing to play with consistent composure, and connecting with his deep wide receiver rotation for explosive plays.
Plenty of newcomers made their debut on Saturday night, but nothing matched KJ Edwards and Carsyn Baker's collective performance. Texas A&M will host Arizona State on Saturday afternoon at 11 a.m. on ABC.
