No. 8 Texas A&M took care of business during the first two weeks of the 2026 season, blowing out Missouri State 50-0 and scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter to defeat Arizona State 48-20 last Saturday afternoon. Starting 2-0 was fully expected, but neither victory was perfect, as the Aggies' revamped offensive line has been problematic, to say the least.
SEC play officially kicks off for the Aggies in Week 3, hosting Kentucky (1-1) for the first time since 2018, serving as the first conference test before heading to Baton Rouge in Week 4 to face LSU. On paper, Texas A&M enters the weekend as a 16-point favorite after defeating ASU, while the Wildcats' blowout 45-17 home loss to Alabama showed plenty of holes, especially on defense.
This game
will also mark the first reunion between coach Mike Elko and former Texas A&M DC Jay Bateman, who now serves as Kentucky's defensive coordinator after leaving for the job after the 2025 season. Yes, this is an intriguing storyline, but the real focus is on Texas A&M's offense finally living up to the preseason expectations.
Starting quarterback Marcel Reed has passed for 396 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception in the first two games, completing 65.5% of his throws, and he looks more poised in the pocket, but he still has a way to go in consistency.
Facing Kentucky's 59th-ranked rush defense, the expectation is that freshmen running backs KJ Edwards and Carsyn Baker should see more playing time to add an explosive element to the run game, but until we see it, this is simply a guess.
Ahead of Texas A&M vs. Kentucky on Saturday, here are the Aggies Wire staff predictions.

Texas A&M's elite second-half defense in Saturday's 48-20 win over ASU was encouraging, especially the plays of sophomore Edge Marco Jones and senior cornerback Julio Humphrey, who led the way with two pick-six defensive scores.
However, the Aggie offense has yet to produce multiple explosive plays in the passing or run game since the opener, with just three plays of 20+ yards through two games. This is largely because the offensive line has struggled to find consistency, which could change against a Wildcats defense that has surrendered eight 20-plus-yard plays this season.
This starts with better blocking up front, combined with quarterback Marcel Reed getting the ball out faster and making more plays outside the pocket to hit his receivers in stride.
After giving up four sacks, six tackles for loss, and fumbling four times, losing twice, Texas A&M's secondary doesn't fear Kentucky QB Kenny Minchey's arm after the transfer passed for just 146 yards against Alabama, while the Aggies' defensive line should be able to generate consistent pressure and take over in the second half, similar to last Saturday's performance.
As you can tell, I'm much more confident that Texas A&M covers the spread and starts 3-0 this year.
Prediction: Texas A&M 38, Kentucky 20

Right now, I’m not sure what to think about the Texas A&M offense. The talent is there, and the passing game looks legitimate when Marcel Reed has time to throw. However, the offensive line and running backs are not in sync yet. Is that because of the playcalling, or does the offensive line’s skill set not fit the scheme? I honestly have no clue, but the Aggies need to figure it out.
Kentucky held Alabama to 13 points in the first half and pulled down two interceptions. However, the Wildcats surrendered 32 unanswered points after halftime. That is why I believe this is an opportunity for A&M to find some balance offensively before facing its toughest opponent of the season so far at LSU.
Kentucky’s offense did its defense no favors against Alabama, and the special teams unit played a significant role in the second-half collapse. I could see something similar happening in this game, with the A&M defense generating one or two turnovers and giving the offense additional possessions.
While I do not fully trust the Aggies’ offense yet, I think it will be good enough to put together a few long touchdown drives. I also trust the defense to create favorable field position and eventually become too much for the Wildcats to handle. A&M will remain undefeated and pick up its first SEC victory of 2026.
Prediction: Texas A&M 34, Kentucky 20

Texas A&M opens SEC play on Saturday against a hard-nosed, explosive Kentucky team that can hurt you in several ways. Former Texas A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman was able to draw up some schemes to make Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell uncomfortable in the pocket at times, before the Crimson Tide were able to pull away in the second half, which is something the Aggies’ offensive line must be prepared for.
Texas A&M’s o-line has been very concerning at times, tied for No. 71 with 4.0 sacks allowed and the No. 74 rushing offense in FBS, which is uncharacteristic for a unit that has been so dominant in the last two years under Mike Elko.
The secondary has to avoid allowing explosive plays and the defense as a whole must play cleaner football.
For Reed? He must remain poised, calm, and collected in the pocket and avoid getting happy feet. Offensive coordinator Holman Wiggins must also draw up more plays to get the ball into Mario Craver's hands more often.
Overall, Texas A&M has too much depth for Kentucky this season. I like the Aggies to bounce back, fix their errors and take a step forward in Week 3.
Prediction: Texas A&M 38, Kentucky 13
