Freshman libero Gabi Rodriguez continued to provide stability in the back row for Texas A&M, even as the Aggies finished their road trip with another loss.
Rodriguez recorded a career-high 21 digs during A&M’s four-set loss at Arkansas on Sunday. She surpassed her previous career high of 20 digs against Wisconsin in September, bringing that mark to twice in her freshman season.
The performance continued an impressive start to Rodriguez’s college career. She has recorded at least 10 digs in 15 of A&M’s 17 matches and has 225 this season. Rodriguez also became the fastest freshman in program history to reach 200 career digs, hitting the milestone during the Aggies’ five-set loss at Oklahoma.
Her work against Arkansas helped A&M remain competitive
after dropping the first two sets. The Aggies responded with a 25-20 third-set win and built an early fourth-set advantage before the Razorbacks recovered to secure the match. Rodriguez received some help from Kyndal Stowers, who added 12 digs along with 20 kills. However, A&M could not create enough offense around Stowers and fell 25-20, 25-17, 20-25 and 25-22.
The loss dropped the Aggies to 10-7 overall and 3-2 in SEC play after they opened the conference schedule with three consecutive victories. Rodriguez’s production has remained consistent despite the team’s recent struggles, and her ability to keep points alive will become even more important against the stronger attacks remaining on A&M’s schedule.
Texas A&M returns to Reed Arena on Friday to host Florida at 6 p.m. CT.
