Texas A&M's No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class has been under the national microscope amid the Aggies' poor 2026 season, finishing 4-4 overall and 1-4 in SEC play. Among the 25 commits in the cycle, the Aggies lead the nation with six five-star commits, including wide receiver Eric McFarland, who is considered a first-year contributor once he arrives on campus.
Junior wide receiver Mario Craver's future remains unclear, as he may return for another season or declare for the 2027 NFL Draft, making McFarland's addition to the 2027 roster critical. However, McFarland suffered an ACL tear back in September and, according to On3's Chad Simmons, underwent surgery this past week.
It's fair to say that Aggie fans should be worried about McFarland's recovery
timetable, and what this injury might do to his explosive skill set, as former five-star wide receiver Jerome Myles, who left the program this offseason, did not look as explosive, moving more like a tight end than a wideout based on his preseason footage.
Still, McFarland is a smaller, shiftier athlete with no long injury history and is highly motivated to become one of the Aggies' most reliable playmakers for years to come.
“Don’t doubt me,” McFarland told Simmons. “I might be injured right now, but when I get back, I’m going to change the whole program."
McFarland is in no way deterred from making a full recovery and getting back to the practice field as soon as next preseason after his early enrollment in January, as his close relationship with Texas A&M OC Holmon Wiggins continues to play a significant role in his determination, as Wiggins' background as one of the top wide receiver coaches includes dealing with similar injury issues.
“Coach Wiggins was just out to see me a few days ago,” McFarland stated. “We were just chitchatting, talking it up. He is very supportive. He has been great.”
Eric McFarland is expected to sign with the Aggies next month, and like most of the program's 25 2027 commits, one bad season in College Station has not dampened their hopes for the program's future.
