For the first time since 2018, Texas A&M football will host the Kentucky Wildcats for the Aggies' SEC opener in Bryan-College Station on Saturday.
In his third season as Texas A&M's head coach, Mike Elko is seeking his 13th conference win on Saturday, but the Aggies will need major adjustments in the trenches to avoid a potential upset by a physical, talented Kentucky squad.
The Wildcats opened the 2026 campaign with a 45-13 victory over Youngstown State, before dropping their league opener against No. 12 Alabama last Saturday in Lexington. While it is taking time for the pieces to mesh, head coach Will Stein is an offensive guru with a reputation for his explosive schemes. If the Aggies do not make the correct adjustments in the trenches and
secondary, this contest could be a dogfight.

Kentucky offense
Three players to watch: Willie Rodriguez (TE), Henry Boyer (TE) and Jason Patterson (RB)
Tale of the tape: Stein is an offensive mastermind whose pro-style offense favors explosive plays and getting every athlete involved, including physical tight ends like Willie Rodriguez and Henry Boyer, who have combined for 148 receiving yards and two touchdowns. It gives defenses a massive challenge to set the tone and play fast. The scheme is difficult for defensive units to read, but the players under Stein's tutelage know how to use it effectively and efficiently.
In his first season at the helm in Lexington, Stein sought playmakers he knew could run the scheme at a high level. That includes Notre Dame transfer quarterback Kenny Minchey, who has thrown for 447 yards, five touchdowns and one interception this season.
Turnovers caused the Kentucky offense issues against Alabama in Week 2, as the Crimson Tide reeled in a pick and recovered two fumbles. The Tide also kept the Wildcats behind the sticks, with six tackles for loss and four total sacks, an area the Aggies will look to expose in College Station on Saturday.

Tale of the tape: A familiar face leads the Kentucky defense into Kyle Field in Week 3. Former Texas A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman is calling plays for the unit in Lexington in 2026 after spending the previous two seasons on Elko's staff. His shifts up front, disguised coverages and emphasis on calculated pressure are heavily influenced by the Aggies' head coach.
Facing the Crimson Tide and talented dual-threat quarterback Keelon Russell, the Wildcats' defense forced a fumble and two interceptions, including a pick-six. Bateman's unit also recorded seven tackles for loss and four sacks, finishing the game ranked fifth in the SEC with 6.0 sacks in 2026. The Aggies' offensive line must establish more dominance in the trenches and prevent talented defensive linemen like Tavion Gadson and Mi'Quise Humphrey-Grace from getting loose and wreaking havoc.
