Texas A&Mwas well represented across the NFL during the opening week of the regular season. While dozens of former Aggies suited up as players and worked on coaching staffs, the program’s three head coaches put together a perfect weekend.
Dan Campbell, Aaron Glenn and Klint Kubiak each guided their teams to a Week 1 victory. The wins came in three very different ways, with Detroit surviving an overtime thriller, New York controlling Tennessee on both sides of the ball and Las Vegas pulling away from Miami.
The biggest milestone belonged to Kubiak, who earned his first victory in his first regular-season game as an NFL head coach. With all three coaches beginning the year 1-0, Texas A&M’s influence around the league extends well beyond the players
on the field.
Klint Kubiak – Las Vegas Raiders
Kubiak’s Raiders defeated the Miami Dolphins 27-13, giving him his first NFL victory in his first regular-season game as a head coach. Las Vegas controlled possession for 34:53, while Kirk Cousins threw three touchdown passes despite two interceptions.
Ashton Jeanty also played a major role, finishing with 147 scrimmage yards and reaching the end zone twice. The Raiders’ defense recorded five sacks and held Miami to 2-of-10 on third down.
Kubiak began his coaching career at Texas A&M under Mike Sherman and earned his master’s degree from the university.
Aaron Glenn − New York Jets
Aaron Glenn led the Jets to a 23-10 win over the Tennessee Titans, opening the season by defeating former Jets coach Robert Saleh. New York outgained Tennessee 367-195 and possessed the ball for 38:46.
The Jets recorded three sacks and held the Titans without a touchdown until late in the fourth quarter. Glenn’s team controlled the game on both sides of the ball, providing an encouraging start after finishing 3-14 during his first season.
Glenn starred at cornerback for Texas A&M before becoming a first-round NFL draft pick.
Dan Campbell − Detroit Lions
The Lions nearly gave the game away after building a 21-point lead but ultimately outlasted the New Orleans Saints with a 31-30 overtime victory.
Detroit scored first in overtime when Jared Goff connected with Amon-Ra St. Brown for a four-yard touchdown. New Orleans answered with a touchdown of its own but went for the win, and the Lions stopped the ensuing two-point conversion. Jahmyr Gibbs carried the offense with a career-high 156 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He also caught five passes for 30 yards, accounting for 186 of Detroit’s 369 total yards.
Campbell was a four-year letterman at Texas A&M from 1995–98 and served as a team captain during his senior season.
All three victories came in different ways, but Texas A&M’s NFL head coaches finished the opening weekend with a perfect 3-0 record. Kubiak earning his first win made the weekend even more notable and gave Aggie fans another former member of the program to follow this season.
