Texas A&M football bounced back to defeat Arkansas in Week 5 after back-to-back conference losses to Kentucky and LSU, but the Aggies face arguably their toughest opponent yet on Saturday.
That obstacle comes in the form of No. 14 Missouri (4-1) and their explosive offense featuring one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the conference. The Tigers are coming off a dominant, shocking 45-17 win over No. 8 Florida, in which quarterback Austin Simmons threw for a season-high 340 yards and two touchdowns, marking his fourth game this season with 250-plus passing yards. Meanwhile, running back Jamal Roberts rushed for a career-high 211 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries.
The Aggies' secondary must be prepared for Simmons and electric wide receivers
Cayden Lee and Donovoan Olugbode, both of whom rank top-10 in the SEC in total receiving yards thus far. To pull off the upset against Mizzou, Texas A&M must play clean, complementary football on all fronts, which is something the Aggies haven't accomplished against a ranked opponent this season.
Here are some quotables from Texas A&M safety Tawfiq Byard and offensive lineman Lamont Rogers ahead of the team's road trip to CoMo:
Byard gives a status update on his health entering Week 6 and how it's felt being able to get out on the gridiron more
"It's been good. I've been dealing with some injuries coming into fall camp. Before the first game, I banged up my ankle a little bit," Byard said. "Just getting back into routine, getting back in shape and getting back to doing what I do."
Byard gives flowers to strength and conditioning coach Tommy Moffitt and the Aggies' staff for keeping health a priority
"Coach Moffitt does a great job of getting the guys in shape, getting guys bigger (and) getting guys ready to go for the season. My past couple of years, strength and conditioning was kind of up and down, but here it's steady. They take care of you on and off the field, nutrition and everything," Byard said.
Byard on the secondary's lockdown performance in the second half against the Razorbacks
"I don't think it was anything different, I think we just dialed in and executed. In the past, we haven't executed coming out of half," Byard said.
Byard discusses why he chose to come to Texas A&M
"Coach Elko (and) Coach Ish (Ishmael Aristide) are very good defensive guys. I had a lot of schools to go to coming out of the portal and when I talked to Coach Elko, he sat me down and told me I would have to earn a spot, nothing was going to be given to me," Byard said. "I know the track record of this defense. It brought a lot of safeties in the league, it's very versatile, very multiple. You're going to be asked to do different things: asked to cover, asked to play the deep third, asked to play the hook, blitz, guard tight ends. It's multiple and it compliments my play."
Byard's mentality
"Just to stay ready. Outside the x's and o's, always stay ready (and) keep your body right," Byard said. "Me being in college for my fourth year now, I've dealt with a little bit of injuries so just trying to stay ready, being healthy, communication... all those things play a big part."
Rogers explains how he's worked his way into Texas A&M's starting lineup
"I've just been playing physical. Really, just having a different mindset in practice wanting to really dominate everybody and they saw it in me that I'm the guy for the job," Rogers said.
Rogers on increasing his physicality
"(It's) the extra film, the film I've been watching. Just going in there and asking questions more (and) knowing the game plan, knowing the execution and just knowing my assignment," Rogers said.
Rogers unveils the moment he knew he was ready to be in the starting rotation
"It's always that first snap of the game. After you get the jitters out, it's go-time after that," Rogers said. "I'm a football player and I love the game."
