With the NFL preseason officially wrapped, teams are now entering the chaotic stretch of trimming rosters to the 53‑man limit and assembling practice squads. It’s the time of year when front offices get creative. IR stashing, veteran releases, and strategic maneuvering to protect young talent from the waiver wire. And inevitably, some players become victims of the numbers game.
On Sunday, the Miami Dolphins announced they will release former Texas A&M linebacker Tyrel Dodson, ending his two‑year stint with the team. The move comes as a surprise considering Dodson was one of Miami’s most productive defenders last season. As a full‑time starter, he posted a career‑high 129 tackles, five sacks, one interception, and a forced fumble, finishing near
the top of the roster in multiple categories.
While Dodson ranked 60th out of 88 qualifying linebackers in overall defensive grade, the raw production was undeniable and his presence as a steady, physical interior defender made him a key piece of Miami’s front seven.
But the Dolphins are under new leadership, and the shift in philosophy is already showing. The new general manager is reportedly extremely high on rookie linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, viewing him as a future “green‑dot” player capable of handling communication duties and anchoring the defense. That confidence, paired with Rodriguez’s rapid development, appears to have given the front office and coaching staff enough comfort to move on from last year’s team leader in tackles.
Dodson now enters the open market at a time when linebacker depth is at a premium across the league. Given his production and experience, he should draw interest quickly. For Miami, the decision signals a clear commitment to youth and a new defensive identity heading into 2026.
