Texas A&M's opening-season 50-0 shutout win over Missouri State was the first step towards the program's ultimate goal of making it back to the College Football Playoff for a second consecutive season. However, blowing out an inferior opponent was expected, as the Aggies will face their first significant challenge of the year vs. visiting Arizona State
, which is coming off a 70-7 win over Morgan State.This week, 12th Man Production's award-winning program, The Pulse, premiered on Monday, providing an in-depth look at the Aggies' shutout victory, which, even during the first-half struggles, particularly the offensive line failing to protect starting quarterback Marcel Reed, showed a team playing with passion and, most importantly, having fun.
During Mike Elko's media appearances, including Wednesday's Aggie Football Hour, facing an Arizona State offense that produced 70 points, with transfer quarterback Cutter Boley's career-high 387 yards and six touchdowns, is tough to gauge given the Sun Devils' Week 1 opponent, but it's clear that stopping the run early and often, and pressuring Boley to make perfect throws from the pocket, is the key to victory.
On the other side, starting quarterback Marcel Reed must match his Week 1 performance and connect with his deep wide receiver corps on more explosive plays, which means the offensive line needs to play much better to start the game and continue opening up holes in the running game.
The Aggies enter the early Saturday kickoff as a 14.5-point favorite, which, for my taste, is too high. Still, the emotions in Kyle Field will be high as the annual Red, White & Blue game will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, reminding us to never forget a day that has, and will continue to live in infamy.
