There was a red flag on the San Francisco 49ers practice participation report Thursday when running back Kaelon Black showed up as a limited participant because of a groin injury.
Black wasn't on the Wednesday participation report which meant the groin issue was something that cropped up Thursday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan in an interview with Adam Copeland and Derek Papa on KNBR in San Francisco gave some good news on Black, indicating he's not worried about the issue impacting Black in Week 2.
"No, I think we're just being smart with him," Shanahan said. "It was a little tight today, so we didn't want to push him too hard."
While this is a positive update, Black isn't out of the woods yet.
The team will need to see how Black responds to any treatment
and how he feels Friday when they take the field for their final practice of the week. Even if he's not a full participant Friday, he'll have all day Saturday and then Sunday morning to get right and suit up Sunday afternoon at Levi's Stadium vs. the Miami Dolphins.
If Black's groin tightness lingers into Sunday we'd likely see second-year RB Jordan James active and working behind Christian McCaffrey in the backfield.
