The San Francisco 49ers had one of the worst pass rushes in the league last year, finishing with just 20 sacks, which was the lowest total of all 32 teams.
San Francisco's front has been better this year, as they've recorded 11 sacks through five games, despite players like Nick Bosa, Mykel Williams, Alfred Collins and Sam Okuayinonu all missing significant time so far this year.
While Williams is back and Bosa is nearing his return, 49ers tight end George Kittle has apparently been looking for the team to add more proven talent on the edge, as general manager John Lynch revealed that he's asked him about trading for Khalil Mack.
Mack, 35, was a first-round pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2014 out of Buffalo. In his 13 seasons between the Raiders,
Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Chargers, he's made nine Pro Bowls and three All-Pro teams. He also earned NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2016.
This year, Mack has 15 tackles (five for a loss), five quarterback hits and three sacks for the winless Chargers. Mack signed a one-year, $18 million deal to return to Los Angeles this year, and if they're not going where they thought they were, Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz may be willing to move on from the aging veteran for draft capital.
San Francisco needs to get younger, but if they can capitalize on this incredible start and make a deep run in the postseason, it might be worth it to make a deal.
