The Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday released former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens as part of their final cuts per NFL Media's Mike Garafolo.
Teams must have their 90-man rosters trimmed down to 53 by Sunday at 3:00pm Pacific Time.
Mullens has carved out a nice career after putting up some good numbers in 16 starts with the 49ers across the three seasons he was with the club. In 19 appearances he completed 64.5 percent of his throws for 4,714 yards with 25 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. While he threw for more yards than any 49ers quarterback ever in their first 16 starts with the team, turnovers were an issue for Mullens who guided San Francisco to a 5-11 record as their starter.
Only two players in NFL history have thrown for more
yards than Mullens in their first 16 starts − Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (5,100 yards) and Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert (4,673 yards).
Since then the former undrafted rookie from Southern Mississippi has found a way to stick around in the league. He spent a year with Cleveland in 2021 after leaving the 49ers. Then he was in Minnesota for three years as a backup before making his way to Jacksonville for the 2025 campaign.
Now the 31-year-old is a free agent again, but Garafolo indicated there are teams around the NFL in need of backup signal callers who should ensure that Mullens isn't unemployed for very long.
In 38 games as a pro Mullens is completing 66 percent of his throws for 6,448 yards, 34 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. He's 5-15 overall as a starter.
