San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Friday didn't mince words when asked about the impending meeting between the 49ers and disgruntled wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
Aiyuk is set to meet with 49ers brass at 3:00pm Pacific Time along with his agent Drew Rosenhaus. Shanahan told reporters in his press conference after Friday's practice that he won't be involved in the meeting. His answers to additional questions about the meeting indicated just how far gone the relationship is between the coach and the 2023 All-Pro wide receiver.
We transcribed the exchange between reporters and Shanahan with some questions shortened for clarity:
Reporter A: "Kyle, there's buzz about Brandon Aiyuk and Drew Rosenhaus coming and going to the business offices,
meeting with team officials. Will you have any role in that?"
Shanahan: "No."
Reporter B: "Lot of talk about Aiyuk. What's gonna happen today?"
Shanahan: "No clue. Your guess is as good as mine."
Reporter B: "What would you like to see happen?"
Shanahan: "I could care less."
Reporter C: "Is there an incentive for you guys to kinda have this thing be over as quickly as possible just with all the noise that's going around with it?"
Shanahan: "It's been over for our football team for a long time. So, I don't hear much except questions about him today, but it's not too big of a deal for me to answer."
Reporter D: "Is it your understanding that if he comes off the reserve list that he goes automatically onto the active list and that you guys would have to make a transaction to accommodate that?"
Shanahan: "I'd have to ask a lot of questions to get that answer. I think it's complicated, so, I haven't asked one question. I look at this as it has zero to do with our football team. Anything that has zero to do with our football team, especially during the season, I will give zero thoughts to."
Reporter D: "But doesn't it affect your roster? That affects your football team."
Shanahan: "I'm sure if it did people would be letting me know."
If there were any doubts about whether the Aiyuk saga would end with the wide receiver no longer in San Francisco, Shanahan's press conference erased them. There's a financial matter regarding Aiyuk's bonus that will need to be resolved, but once it is it appears the team will quickly part ways with the former first-round pick.
