The San Francisco 49ers' Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals took on a little extra importance Sunday evening when the Denver Broncos held off the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football.
Denver's 34-30 victory capped off a terrific day for the 49ers that saw every other team in the NFC West lose.
First, the Seattle Seahawks fell to the Washington Commanders 33-31 in the early slate for their first loss of the year. The 49ers handled business at home vs. the Cardinals to continue their undefeated season in the afternoon. Then in the nightcap the Rams joined the Cardinals among the two-loss teams in the division.
Here's what the NFC West standings look like after Week 3:
- 49ers (3-0)
- Seahawks (2-1)
- Rams (1-2)
- Cardinals (1-2)
This doesn't mean much at this point since we're only one-sixth of the way
through the year. However, the 49ers are 2-0 inside the division and they've now given themselves a one-game cushion on the Seahawks and a two-game cushion on the Rams. Given the injury problems they've had this season an extra game or two of wiggle room it what promises to be a tough divisional race down the stretch could be the difference between winning the division and not.
There's a long way to go for the 49ers, but it's hard to ask for a better third week of the season than the one San Francisco got.
