It's been a good 24 hours for San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Not only did his team wallop the division rival Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night in Australia, but Tom Pelissero of The Ringer and Netflix Sports
reported Friday that Shanahan had quietly signed a contract extension during the offseason. He is now under contract with the 49ers beyond the 2027 deal he signed back in September 2023.Terms of the deal were not immediately reported, nor was the number of years he is now under contract.
The move is hardly a surprise given what Shanahan has built in the Bay Area since arriving in 2017. Across 10 seasons, he owns an 83-67 record (.553), a mark dragged down by two rebuilding years (2017 and 2018) and a pair of injury-riddled
campaigns in 2020 and 2024. Strip those away, and the picture sharpens considerably: six playoff appearances, two NFC Championships (2019, 2023), and three trips to the postseason with double-digit win totals.
Even last season's 12-5 campaign, which ended in a divisional-round loss, reinforced how quickly he's able to right the ship after a down year.
With the extension reportedly done, the 49ers avoided any in-season speculation about Shanahan's future. Fortunately, they already started the season 1-0 and look to take back the NFC West division title the team hasn't had since 2023.
