The San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday had eight players out of practice to begin their on-field preparations for a Week 3 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals.
Hidden within the eight players out are a couple of silver linings.
First, not every player was out due to injury.
Left tackle Trent Williams, running back Christian McCaffrey, linebacker Dre Greenlaw and defensive end Nick Bosa all received veteran rest days. They account for half of Wednesday's absences.
Second, there are no unexpected absences.
Wide receiver Demarcus Robinson (ankle), defensive end Romello Height (hand), defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. (ankle) and wide receiver Mike Evans (hip) were all banged up in the 49ers' Week 2 win over the Miami Dolphins. Robinson and Thompson are
both IR candidates who'll miss a few weeks. Height had surgery on a broken hand, and Evans' hip issue is being managed throughout the week per head coach Kyle Shanahan.
The quartet of players out for rest reasons should be back Thursday. We can expect Robinson and Thompson to be out all week, while Height and Evans both have a chance to play Sunday. The latter duo is worth keeping an eye on throughout the week. Beyond that the hope is no new names are added to the practice report before the injury report is announced Friday.
