The San Francisco 49ers are expected to lose one of the team's recent 2026 cuts to the waiver wire.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Las Vegas Raiders, who hold the No. 1 waiver priority, are expected to claim former 49ers cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. on Monday.
Luter, a fifth-round pick out of South Alabama in 2023, spent all three of his NFL seasons in San Francisco but was waived over the weekend as part of the 49ers' cuts to 53 players. He was among a group of defensive backs let go, along with Eli Apple, Ashtyn Davis, Patrick McMorris, Jakob Robinson and Jalen Stroman, as the 49ers reshaped their secondary depth heading into the season.
During his time with the 49ers, Luter carved out a niche primarily as a special-teams contributor
rather than a regular in the secondary. He appeared in 27 total games over three seasons but started just three, seeing the bulk of his snaps on coverage units. In 2025, his most extensive season, Luter played 63% of San Francisco's special-teams snaps compared to just 25% of defensive snaps, finishing with 28 combined tackles, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. His defensive role never expanded much beyond a rotational piece, and he finished his 49ers tenure without an interception.
