Eddy Piñeiro kicked away a possible game ball for the San Francisco 49ers' Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Shanahan called Piñeiro's 57-yard field goal as the first half ended, "one of the biggest kicks I've seen," but noted that his two missed PATs cost him the chance to get a game ball for his performance.
"I was going to probably give him a game ball or something, but he ruined that with the two extra points missed," Shanahan said.
Shanahan was saying it in jest, but the misses mattered in a game San Francisco won 36-30. Asked how he reconciles a kicker who is excellent on field goals with one who struggles on extra points, Shanahan didn't overthink it. "I don't know, really," he said. "I just go off
of whether they made it or missed it."
That likely means Piñeiro won't get punished too much for the missed kicks, especially after the 49ers gave him a big contract extension this offseason. Luckily, Shanahan sounded like a coach who will take the field goal and move on. The game ball, though, is staying on the shelf.
