The country of Australia has never had more eyeballs on an NFL game than the Week 1 drubbing the San Francisco 49ers' gave the Los Angeles Rams.
A release from the NFL on Monday afternoon indicated the 49ers' 27-7 victory averaged 18.5 million viewers in the US and peaked at 21.3 million viewers.
Via the NFL:
Globally, the historic matchup drew 21.7 million viewers, with fans from over 200 countries and territories tuning in for the first-ever NFL regular season game played in Australia.
49ers-Rams garnered over 340 million social impressions and 14.5 million engagements across Netflix and NFL social channels.
In Australia, 49ers-Rams was the most-watched NFL game ever in the country.
This is great news for the 49ers after they spent the week in Australia
leading up to the game. While the coaching staff and players might not like the long journey to play in a football game, the organization surely loves the opportunity to expand its brand globally. Not only did they get a chance to be in the country doing events for a week, the team on the field looked like the best team in the sport while taking on the designated home team and Super Bowl favorite.
It's hard to find a way the Australia trip wasn't a significant success for the 49ers as an organization.
