The San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday officially announced their trade with the Indianapolis Colts for defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. In a corresponding move the 49ers released cornerback Jack Jones.
Buckner is rejoining the 49ers in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round pick as was initially reported Tuesday.
To make room for Buckner the 49ers let go of Jones who struggled in extended action vs. the Atlanta Falcons and was eventually benched for rookie CB Ephesians Prysock. Jones is a vested veteran who could be an option to return to the 49ers' practice squad. He played in seven games this season and posted 11 tackles with three pass breakups.
The 49ers originally drafted Buckner with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2016 draft. He spent his first
four seasons in San Francisco where he racked up 28.5 sacks and 38 tackles for loss in 63 games. San Francisco dealt him to Indianapolis during the 2020 offseason and over the course of seven seasons with the Colts Buckner posted 47 sacks and 63 tackles for loss in 95 games.
