The San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday made a couple of moves on their active roster, including the surprise placement of defensive tackle CJ West on IR.
It's unclear what injury West is dealing with. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on neither Sunday nor Monday after the 49ers' Week 2 win indicated the second-year defensive tackle is dealing with any ailments.
Another defensive tackle injury leaves the 49ers woefully short at that position. DT Alfred Collins is already out for the year with a torn patellar tendon. DT James Thompson Jr. suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 2, and now West is out for at least four weeks per IR rules.
West's exit to IR left the 49ers with Osa Odighizuwa and rookie Gracen Halton as the only healthy defensive tackles on their
roster.
In response to the rash of injuries on the defensive interior the 49ers signed veteran Naquan Jones to a one-year deal off the Minnesota Vikings practice squad. Jones, 28, landed in the NFL as an undrafted free agent and debuted in 2021 with the Tennessee Titans where he spent his first two-plus seasons. He spent a season and change with the Arizona Cardinals, and last season played in 12 games across stints with the Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Texans.
Jones has appeared in 60 games with eight starts in his five-year career. He has 102 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hits and 6.5 sacks.
