The San Francisco 49ers have a little turmoil at linebacker after their Week 5 win over the Seattle Seahawks, and on Wednesday they tried out a quartet of players at the position.
According to the NFL transaction wire the 49ers had linebackers Eugene Asante, Jamon Johnson, Kobe King and Anfernee Orji in for workouts.
There's not a ton of experience in that group. Asante hasn't played in an NFL game. Johnson played in two games with the Green Bay Packers last season and racked up 10 tackles. King played in 14 games last season with the Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets. He posted 10 total tackles. Orji was with the New Orleans Saints in 2024 and started for two of his 16 appearances with them. He had 30 tackles and two tackles for loss that season.
He hasn't played in a NFL game since.
It would appear the 49ers are angling for some internal depth. Perhaps it has to do with the suspension LB Dre Greenlaw is serving for Week 6, but it may have more to do with backup LB Garret Wallow nursing a hamstring injury he suffered vs. the Seahawks.
If Wallow is out for a significant period, the 49ers may want to promote linebacker Jalen Graham from the practice squad which would open a place for one of the players they tried out to land without taking up an active roster spot.
With a Monday night game in Week 6, the 49ers don't begin their practice week until Thursday. We'll find out then what their plan is for any of the LBs they tried out Wednesday.
