The NFL has fined San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk for "imitation of chugging a beer" during the 49ers' 35-13 win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 2 according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Juszczyk, nicknamed 'Juice,' after a 21-yard reception in the victory did his signature celebration where he pretends to drink juice in a nod to his very well-known nickname. The NFL didn't see it as such. Per Schefter, Juszczyk was fined $14,926 and told the 35-year-old "your imitation of chugging a beer constituted an offensive demonstration and could reasonably be construed as being in poor taste." The fine is under appeal.
It makes some sense that the NFL is trying to tamp down on some gestures that could be considered violent or offensive, but this
one doesn't really meet that criteria.
Juszczyk's nickname that fans know and chant when he makes a play makes it very obvious what he's doing with this celebration. Not to mention the idea that "chugging a beer" could be considered offensive by a league that's stadiums and television broadcasts are littered with advertisements for various types of alcohol.
Shoutout to Bud Light, a league sponsor which literally has cans with every team's logo on them.
The NFL has earned its 'No Fun League' moniker. In the instance of this Juszczyk penalty the name 'Needless Fine League' can also apply.
