The injury problems on the defensive line are becoming untenable for the San Francisco 49ers.
After another injury up front in their 35-13 win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 2, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters the team will look to add some help on the defensive line.
"Yeah, I mean we always look at that," Shanahan said. "That's stuff that, as soon as we lost Sam (Okuayinonu) and stuff, we talked to Leonard (Floyd). We talked to a couple people, but we'll see how this goes. There's no one that's for sure. We'll see with losing James (Thompson Jr.) possibly today, we'll see what his ankle injury is, it's a little different position with inside players, but we've lost about three guys here in the last two games, so we gotta do something
eventually."
San Francisco could certainly use some help at defensive end, but after undrafted rookie James Thompson Jr. went down with an ankle injury against the Dolphins it's becoming hard to ignore the lack of interior depth.
Second-year defensive tackle Alfred Collins is already out for the season. Thompson may miss some time. And the 49ers entered the year without a ton of bodies up front. They finished Sunday's game with Osa Odighizuwa, CJ West and Gracen Halton as the true DTs on the roster. Khalid Kareem and Keion White can both play inside, but they're not ideal players to have lining up at defensive tackle more often than situationally.
Defensive end remains a place the 49ers could use some help. Injuries in the receiving corps have put a spotlight there as a need as well. Defensive tackle remains perhaps the biggest area of concern on the roster for San Francisco and it wouldn't be a surprise if they added some help there before Week 3.
