San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle appears to be making his return in Week 1 vs. the Los Angeles Rams just in time to try and make some NFL history.
Kittle is sitting on 595 receptions entering Thursday night's game, which will be his 125th in the NFL. If Kittle hauls in five catches against the Rams he'll join Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (695) and Dallas Cowboys legend Jason Witten (605) as the only TEs in NFL history with at least 600 receptions in their first 125 games according to NFL Communications.
That's not a bad list to be on for the 49ers star who entered the league as a fifth-round pick in 2017.
It isn't farfetched to think Kittle will turn in five catches Thursday. He posted nine catches for 84 yards and a touchdown
in his lone matchup with the Rams last year. For his career he has 70 catches for 944 yards and seven touchdowns in 14 games against the Rams. That's an average of exactly five catches per game.
Of course, Kittle is coming off an Achilles tear which may limit his role in Thursday's game. However, if the 49ers are able to get Kittle involved enough that he's making five-plus receptions it bodes well for his chances to have a big year.
