The San Francisco 49ers can't stop losing wide receivers. Demarcus Robinson is the latest member of the 49ers WR corps to suffer an injury and now the team may need to add another player at the position.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Sunday after the 49ers' win over the Miami Dolphins said Robinson likely suffered a high ankle sprain that will cost him some time. Shanahan also said the team will look into bringing in another player at the position.
"We'll see. It has been unfortunate," Shanahan said. "It was big losing (De'Zhaun) Stribling last week. You guys know how big it was losing Ricky (Pearsall) over the Summer. And then losing D-Rob today was huge. Christian Kirk's got a couple weeks before he can come back. But we've still got a group of
guys out there that we have played with that have done things, so I'm sure we'll have to add somebody whether it's the practice squad or to the roster. But those are things we'll start discussing tonight and hopefully have an answer by Wednesday."
Kirk is on IR with a return designation. The earliest he'll be able to return is Week 5, which means San Francisco will have two more games before the veteran is eligible to come off the injured list.
San Francisco recently promoted WR KhaDarel Hodge from the practice squad to the active roster. Undrafted rookies Wesley Grimes and Will Pauling are the only other two WRs on the practice squad. Second-year WR Jordan Watkins is on the active roster, but he was a healthy scratch in each of the 49ers' first two games. He and Jacob Cowing could both see some additional run on offense.
The 49ers do have a practice squad spot open if they want to bring in a veteran receiver to that portion of their roster. They could also outright sign someone like Darius Slayton or Zay Jones once they make the roster moves to place players on IR and free up roster spots. Malik Turner has also spent time with the 49ers in multiple stints during the Shanahan era. He's also a free agent who could come in and at least contribute on special teams.
Shanahan will talk with reporters again Monday. The 49ers won't practice again until Wednesday. We'll likely see them hold some tryouts and then sign a receiver ahead of Wednesday's practice.
