Zach Allen has built a reputation as one of the league's most disruptive defensive tackles, and the All-Pro knows exactly what kind of challenge could be waiting for him in Week 4. And he didn't hold back when talking about San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams, whom he could see a lot of when his Denver Broncos visit Levi's Stadium.
"I have all the respect in the world for Trent," Allen said. "I, honestly, I know you see the debates about who's the best. I think he's the best tackle of all time."
Whether Allen gets to test himself against Williams is another question. Williams left Week 3 with a neck injury and did not return. He did not practice Wednesday and is highly questionable to play against Denver.
If Williams does suit up, he'll
face a Broncos defensive line that has been one of the most productive in football. Denver has eight sacks through three games, which is tied for seventh in the league. That group will be going up against an offensive line that has protected Brock Purdy about as well as anyone: Purdy has not been sacked this season.
That sets up a heavyweight matchup up front. Denver's pass rush has found its way to opposing quarterbacks, and the 49ers have kept their quarterback clean. Williams, long regarded as the anchor of San Francisco's line, has been central to that, and Allen's praise only underlines his value to the group.
If Williams can't go, the 49ers will have to find a way to keep Purdy upright without him against one of the league's better pass-rushing units. If he can, Allen will get the matchup he seems to be looking forward to.
