The San Francisco 49ers just lost a familiar face from their practice squad after trading for DeForest Buckner.
The Indianapolis Colts announced Friday that they signed defensive tackle Kevin Givens off San Francisco’s practice squad. Now, Givens fills the spot Buckner left on the Colts’ active roster.
Givens’ time with the 49ers has been a roller coaster in recent days. San Francisco released him Saturday as part of its roster moves ahead of Week 7. Right after news of the Buckner trade broke, the 49ers brought Givens back on the practice squad. Now he’s heading to Indianapolis.
The 29-year-old joined the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Penn State in 2019 and spent eight seasons in San Francisco. He appeared in 71 games with 94 tackles,
19 quarterback hits, eight sacks, three passes defensed, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.
His best season came in 2022, when he started 11 games and finished with 20 tackles, two sacks and seven tackles for loss. He followed that with 22 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 2023, then posted a career-high 3.5 sacks in just eight games in 2024.
Givens played in only five games in 2025 and one so far in 2026, recording two tackles and a quarterback hit.
