San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch has been watching Brock Purdy closely since training camp, and he sees something different in the team's franchise quarterback this year.
Asked Thursday during a radio interview with KBNR on what has impressed him most, Lynch answered in one word: "Everything." However, he pushed back on framing it as a fourth-year leap.
"It's tough to talk about the leap because he's been consistently really, really good since he's been here, and he's played at that level," Lynch said. "I personally have felt something a little different in training camp, throughout the offseason program. I talked about it a few weeks ago. It feels like there's a little more torque in the way he's throwing. He's been known as the layer
king over the years. He's really driving the football this year.
"And then when you can combine efficiency with explosives, that's what he's doing. When you look at his numbers down the field, both efficient and explosive. And then he can extend plays with his legs. He's a playmaker."
Purdy's numbers this year have been otherworldly. Through three games, he's completing 72.3% of his passes for 789 yards, with nine touchdowns, one interception and an average of 9.5 yards per attempt. He has also added 93 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. His 133.1 passer rating leads the NFL, and his nine touchdown passes lead NFC quarterbacks. Even better, he has not been sacked in any of the 49ers' first three games.
