The San Francisco 49ers didn't get active on the waiver wire after final cuts. They weren't awarded any waiver claims while also losing two players to the AFC West.
Undrafted defensive tackle Bryson Eason and veteran cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. were both claimed per the NFL's transaction wire. Eason was scooped up by the Kansas City Chiefs while Luter was snagged by the Las Vegas Raiders.
Eason had a really nice training camp and flashed a couple times in the preseason. The undrafted rookie out of the University of Tennessee played in 68 preseason snaps across three games. He was credited with a pair of run stops and a batted pass per Pro Football Focus. There was likely a battle between Eason and fellow undrafted rookie James Thompson Jr. for
a roster spot, and Thompson Jr. won out.
Luter may be a bit of a tough loss for San Francisco. The 2023 fifth-round pick figured to return to the practice squad where he'd be the first CB up if the team needed to dig into its internal depth. He's played some as a depth cornerback over his career, but he's largely been a special teams contributor. In the preseason this year PFF had him down for a 39.6 passer rating allowed on eight targets.
All of San Francisco's other players who were waived are now unrestricted free agents. Some will almost certainly be back via the practice squad. The 49ers will now also have the ability to scour the free agent market to try and add to their practice squad and on the margins of their 53-man roster.
