The San Francisco 49ers are gearing up for life without linebacker Dre Greenlaw for their Week 6 matchup with the Washington Commanders.
Greenlaw was suspended by the NFL for one game for headbutting a Seattle Seahawks player who wasn't wearing a helmet during a sideline scuffle in the second quarter of the 49ers' Week 5 win. Head coach Kyle Shanahan, who learned of the suspension when it was announced by the NFL, told reporters on a Monday conference call that he was "disappointed" in the NFL's decision.
"I was told that there's an appeals process tomorrow," Shanahan said. "I was also told a couple hours ago that he was suspended. So, I'm assuming he is. Hopefully the appeals process can go better tomorrow and we can get it rescinded. But gotta
wait to see how that goes."
There doesn't seem to be a great chance Greenlaw's appeal is upheld. He's been ejected from games multiple times in his career, and he was suspended for the Denver Broncos' Week 8 game last season for an altercation with an official. He was also ejected from a Week 10 game vs. the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. Greenlaw was disqualified early from another game the following season after a sideline kerfuffle with the Philadelphia Eagles.
If the 49ers don't have Greenlaw, rookie LB Jaden Dugger appears to be their next option at the Will LB spot where he resided following Greenlaw's Week 5 ejection.
