San Francisco 49ers Dre Greenlaw has been fined by the NFL for a wayward punch that connected with the head of Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London.
NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reported Greenlaw received a $12,537 fine for unnecessary roughness. He wasn't flagged for the transgression, but London did leave the game for a concussion evaluation.
London caught a pass from quarterback Michael Penix in the red zone and as he charged forward for a first down, Greenlaw threw a punch to try and dislodge the ball from the receiver ― something Greenlaw's teammate Fred Warner has become masterful at over his nine seasons in the NFL.
Right as Greenlaw threw his punch London ducked and tucked the ball away leading the linebacker to drop a punch that
hit London in the head.
This is the second time Greenlaw has received a punishment from the NFL. He was also suspended from the 49ers' Week 6 matchup against the Washington Commanders for headbutting a Seattle Seahawks player who was not wearing a helmet during a skirmish on the sideline in Week 5.
It'll be interesting to see if the fine deters players from trying to punch the football out, or if it will simply cause Greenlaw to be more careful when trying to dislodge a football.
