The San Francisco 49ers struck gold when they signed veteran kicker Eddy Pineiro last season.
Since joining the 49ers, Pineiro is 30-for-32 on field goals with both of his misses coming from beyond 50 yards. It was a dramatic turnaround for San Francisco after a tumultuous couple of seasons with former third-round pick Jake Moody at the helm.
The 49ers have been able to lean on Pineiro to get them points out of stalled drives and win games for them. That's why it was a pretty significant red flag when he showed up on the injury report ahead of the 49ers matchup with the Miami Dolphins.
Here's everything we know about Pineiro's Week 2 status:
Eddy Pineiro injury update
Pineiro showed up as a non-participant in Wednesday's practice because of an illness. Typically a player
misses a practice with an illness and is back for the rest of the week. Whatever Pineiro was dealing with kept him out all week, though and the 49ers officially listed him as questionable on the injury report.
Will Eddy Pineiro play vs. Miami Dolphins?
Reports are indicating Pineiro will play against Miami. The 49ers didn't officially upgrade his status for Week 2, but they didn't sign a kicker with their Saturday roster moves which means all signs point to Pineiro suiting up.
What Kyle Shanahan said about Eddy Pineiro's injury update
The 49ers head coach didn't have much to add on Pineiro's illness when he was asked about it Friday.
“He's missed Wednesday, Thursday, and today," Shanahan said. "I don't know if it came on Tuesday or Wednesday morning, but he's missed the whole week because of it.”
Who will play for the 49ers if Eddy Pineiro is out?
At this point it would probably be punter Corliss Waitman since the 49ers didn't sign another kicker. The plan would've been to sign a kicker to practice squad and make him a Sunday elevation. The 49ers did work out Greg Joseph and Younghoe Koo per the Saturday transaction report.
