Just three weeks into the 2026 season, the San Francisco 49ersare very thin at wide receiver, and they're starting to get desperate, which is why they worked out several players at the position on Tuesday, including Dante Pettis.
Pettis, 30, played at Washington from 2014-17, where he set the FBS record for punt return touchdowns (9) and earned both All-Pac-12 and All-American honors once.
The 49ers took him in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, and in 28 games over three years with the team, he caught 38 passes for 576 yards and seven touchdowns, which wasn't exactly the production that they hoped for.
Since the 49ers waived him in 2020, he's had stints with the New Orleans Saints, New York Giants and Chicago Bears, catching 54 passes for
655 yards and six touchdowns in 38 games.
In San Francisco, Ricky Pearsall, De'Zhaun Stribling, Christian Kirk and Demarcus Robinson have all landed on injured reserve, and Mike Evans is on the 53-man roster but is dealing with a rib injury that could cost him some time.
Pettis could be an easy plug-and-play option for the team in a pinch, considering his history in the system.
