The San Francisco 49ers can add running back Christian McCaffrey to the list of players dealing with injury problems they'll need to monitor during the bye week.
McCaffrey left the 49ers' Week 7 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in the second quarter. While he returned in the third quarter, he spent most of the first half in the injury tent and working with trainers on the sideline. The 49ers in the second quarter officially announced he was questionable to return with a thigh injury.
After the game McCaffrey told reporters in the locker room that he wasn't sure exactly what happened.
"Man, I have no idea," McCaffrey said via KPIX's Matt Lively. "It sucks because I feel like I was going on a run there and my leg just died on me. Was just trying to get
it going the whole rest of the game, but it just sucks trying to play like that. I know I'll be alright, but it's just really frustrating."
A "dying" leg doesn't sound particularly promising, but McCaffrey was able to finish the game and he continued to look explosive when he was on the field, although his workload diminished significantly after racking up seven touches on the team's first two drives. He finished the game with 13 total touches for 100 yards and a touchdown.
The good news for the 49ers and their 30-year-old running back is he'll get all of Week 8 off while the team is on its Bye week. If a dead leg is still an issue after the week off it may become a long-term thing. For now it'll be a situation worth monitoring over the next couple of weeks.
