The San Francicosc 49ers receiver Mike Evans is questionable for Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos with a rib injury, but general manager John Lynch doesn't think that will stop the veteran from trying to suit up in Week 4.
"He is old school in his mindset, and he doesn't want to miss," Lynch said on KBNR. "We'll always do what's right for our player ... but Mike's going to make every attempt to try to play, and we'll see where that goes."
Evans missed Wednesday's practice and is considered day-to-day with the injury. He's dealt with a litany of other bumps and bruises already this year, too, in his first season with the 49ers following 12 years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
That toughness was part of the scouting report before San Francisco
signed Evans this offseason. Lynch said former Buccaneers teammate Ronde Barber, who remains close with the organization, also passed along a blunt endorsement of Evans' toughness.
With regard to managing a rib injury, Lynch also drew on his own experience. The former NFL safety, who played 15 NFL seasons, said he played through rib injuries on "a few occasions."
"It's not fun. It's painful," Lynch said. "But I think it was better having the rib when you were doing the hitting rather than getting hit." He added that anyone who has played football knows the feeling.
Evans has already made his mark in the 49ers' offense. He has 12 receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns already. San Francisco will have a clearer picture of Evans' availability as the week goes on. For now, Lynch said the team will take its cue from the player's health and his determination to play.
