The San Francisco are reportedly “sniffing around for wide receiver help” and could find one from the downtrodden New York Jets.
No, we're not talking about Garrett Wilson. Reports indicate the Jets have no interest in trading away their star receiver before the Nov. 10 deadline. However, ESPN analyst Seth Walder thinks the 49ers should call the Jets about their other receiver, Adonai Mitchell.
It's no secret that the 49ers are down bad at wide receiver. Mitchell has long flashed more promise than results, though we saw that promise Sunday when he recorded seven receptions for 142 yards and a touchdown. The Jets might be reluctant to part with Mitchell. But because they have Garrett Wilson, Omar Cooper Jr. and Kenyon Sadiq, it's worth making a call.
With Mike Evans (Achilles tendinitis), Deebo Samuel (hamstring), Demarcus Robinson (ankle), and De’Zhaun Stribling (ankle) all at different stages of recovery, it makes sense for the 49ers to look for some support. While all are expected to return at some point this year, that doesn't mean they'll stay healthy for the full year, either. Without those four in the lineup, Brock Purdy has had to rely on running back Christian McCaffrey, tight end George Kittle and receivers like Jordan Watkins, Brandin Cooks, Jacob Cowing and Christian Kirk.
Mitchell, a former second-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2024, would be a new weapon for the offense given his recent flashes of promise. He had seven catches for 142 yards and a touchdown on nine targets in Week 8 and has 16 catches for 265 yards and a touchdown in four games, averaging 16.6 yards per catch, this season.
If Mitchell is traded, it would be the second consecutive year the 24-year-old receiver was sent to a new team. He was included in the blockbuster 2025 deal that sent Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Colts for two first-round picks. It's unclear if the Jets will be sellers at the deadline, but Mitchell could be a low-cost name to watch as the deadline approaches.
