There weren't many flaws to Brock Purdy's Week 2 performance vs. the Miami Dolphins, but head coach Kyle Shanahan did find one.
Shanahan on Monday in a conference call with reporters was asked about Purdy's stellar outing where he completed 20-of-22 passes for 287 yards with two touchdowns, and ran for 30 yards and a touchdown. At one point during the game he completed 18 consecutive throws. The 49ers head coach only drummed up one issue after reviewing the film.
“It was real good," Shanahan said. "He was almost flawless. His last play was probably his only miss on the intentional grounding. Besides that, he was pretty perfect. He had an unbelievable game.”
Purdy's last throw of the game was an intentional grounding where he was pressured and made
an errant throw into no-man's land. It's unclear whether there was a miscommunication with running back Kaelon Black who looked to be the intended target, or if Purdy just threw it away to avoid a sack.
Either way if a player is going to have one bad play in a game, having that bad play come as an incompletion while the team led 35-6 in the fourth quarter is not a bad outcome.
Purdy through two weeks is completing an NFL-best 80.4 percent of his throws for 492 yards with five touchdowns and one interception. He's averaging 8.8 yards per attempt − the second-highest of his career − and his 8.9 percent touchdown rate and 1.8 percent interception rates are the best marks of his career.
The 49ers need the best version of Purdy if they're going to make a deep playoff run this season, and there's never been a better version of Purdy than the one Shanahan and the 49ers got in Week 2.
