The San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday made a couple of changes to their practice squad and officially added veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks.
Cooks and defensive lineman Viliami Fehoko Jr. were both added to the 49ers' practice squad, and released CB Jakob Robinson in a corresponding move.
San Francisco promoted wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge to the active roster before Week 2 and never filled his place on the practice squad. Cooks filled that vacancy, but to add Fehoko the 49ers needed to let a player go to stay at the 17-player limit. That led to Robinson's release.
Cooks gives the 49ers some internal, veteran wide receiver depth while they navigate some injury issues at that position. They have bodies with Hodge, Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins
on the active roster, but nobody in that trio has proven himself as a viable NFL wide receiver on offense. Cooks gives the 49ers the flexibility to elevate him from the practice squad on game day so they have a veteran who has been productive in the NFL recently. Cooks caught 50 balls for 538 yards and three touchdowns in 25 games the last two seasons.
Fehoko is a familiar face for 49ers fans who closely follow preseason roster moves. He spent a little less than a week with the 49ers in training camp. The San Jose State alum gives San Francisco more defensive line depth on their practice squad. He has the size at 6-4, 267 pounds to give them some edge/interior versatility if they need to dip into their practice squad for bodies on the defensive front. Fehoko has yet to make his NFL debut after landing in the league as a fourth-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in the 2023 draft.
