The San Francisco 49ers will need to start thinking about their replacement for Trent Williams, and it could come as soon as the 2027 NFL draft.
In his first 2027 mock draft, Pro Football Focus' Gordon McGuinness has San Francisco taking Iowa offensive tackle Trevor Lauck at No. 32. Lauck sits 34th on PFF’s Big Board.
Trent Williams is still performing at a high level, but the 49ers need to think about a succession plan. Lauck has earned an 82.7 PFF pass-blocking grade in 2026, allowing just three pressures across 172 pass-blocking snaps. He has been at his best as a run blocker on zone runs, earning an 82.8 PFF run-blocking grade on those plays.
Texas’ Trevor Goosby, whom McGuinness mocks to the Texans at No. 4, has allowed seven pressures in 185
snaps. Lauck being at his best on zone runs also makes him a good fit for Kyle Shanahan’s outside-zone-based offense.
The 6-foot-5, 314-pound tackle started at left tackle in all 13 games for the Hawkeyes in 2025 after only starting three games the previous season. The 49ers have notoriously rarely drafted offensive linemen in the first round, but that could change in 2027 if they want to get ahead of Williams' eventual retirement.
