Our final San Francisco 49ers 53-man roster projection wasn't an easy project.
It featured way too much math and multiple iterations where players on the roster fringe were swapped in and out multiple times. We landed on a group of 53 players we feel good about, but it forced us to make a handful of difficult decisions.
Here are the four most difficult cuts we made in the process of making our prediction:
LB Nick Martin
Martin is without question the toughest cut on our list. It's easy to draw a path to him making the roster, but his inability to break through in his second season, combined with new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris put him just on the outside of the roster bubble. His injury issues through his rookie season and this preseason also put him at risk,
and the way the numbers shook out in our projections he was the odd man out. The 49ers could certainly keep him and let Garret Wallow go to bring Wallow back once they make other roster moves.
LB Luke Gifford
The 49ers aren't in a spot to just let good special teams players go. Gifford has been dealing with some injuries, though, and the LB room is crowded. His inability to contribute much defensively last season pushed him to the outside of the roster bubble in our projection.
CB Darrell Luter Jr.
It was a coin flip between Luter and Jack Jones. Jones had a strong camp and preseason showing, which gave him the edge over the 2023 draft pick. Ephesians Prysock is dealing with an injury which could open the door for Luter if the team waives him.
OL Connor Colby
Letting any potential left guard go is tough given the 49ers' issues finding a starter at that position. Colby never got back into the starting LG mix and didn't do enough at the other O-line spots he played to earn his way into the mess of an offensive line room the 49ers have.
