The wrinkles around Brandon Aiyuk's potential reinstatement continue to grow.
There have been more questions arising than answers following Aiyuk's trip to the San Francisco 49ers' facility this week, including how much money he'll have to pay the team back
before being taken off the team's reserve/left squad list. However, one detail may finally be answered: What will the 49ers roster look like if and when Aiyuk rejoins the team?NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that, in effect, nothing will happen to the 49ers roster if Ayiuk is added back to it following a potential reinstatement. The NFL is reportedly expected to grant the team a two-week roster exemption once Aiyuk is cleared to return, which would give the team time before deciding his
future without having to release anyone currently on the roster.
“My understanding is the NFL is expected to give a two-week roster exemption if he gets reinstated," Rapoport said, "which means the 49ers wouldn’t have to do anything immediately anyway.”

Aiyuk and Rosenhaus met with 49ers officials for about an hour at the team’s Santa Clara facility Friday, and the meeting ended without a resolution. The repayment is the biggest sticking point. According to The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero, Aiyuk owes the 49ers roughly $13 million in bonus forfeiture, stemming from the $23 million signing bonus in the four-year, $120 million contract he signed in August 2024.
His reinstatement depends on resolving that financial matter. Rapoport says the NFL Players Association believes that number should be lower, though, and there may be a negotiation between player and team as to what Aiyuk will actually pay back in order to return to the field.
Aiyuk landed on the reserve/left squad list late last season and hasn’t played since Week 7 of the 2024 season. That also complicates any trade, which is why San Francisco releasing him after reinstatement remains the likeliest outcome. Aiyuk would likely prefer an outright release so he can choose his next team. But if the roster exemption happens, then the 49ers can wait to make their decision on Aiyuk's future with the team.
