The San Francisco 49ers were in action on Monday night, as they defeated the Washington Commanders 23-17 at Levi's Stadium to remain undefeated after six weeks. However, while most players were celebrating on Tuesday, one got some bad news.
According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero
, the 49ers are releasing defensive lineman Naquan Jones, making room for linebacker Dre Greenlaw to return to the 53-man roster from his one-game suspension.Jones played at Michigan State from 2016-20 and went undrafted in 2021. After stints with the Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans and Minnesota Vikings, he joined the 49ers in September.
The 28-year-old appeared in three games for San Francisco, playing 45 defensive
snaps and recording two tackles.
This move leaves the 49ers with Osa Odighizuwa, Gracen Halton, Sebastian Valdez and James Thompson Jr. as primary interior defensive linemen. They also have Kevin Givens and McKinnley Jackson on the practice squad, and 2025 first-round pick Mykel Williams can also move inside if necessary.
