What a win for the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5.
They beat the Seattle Seahawks 32-29 in a wild, back-and-forth defensive struggle. A defensive struggle with 61 points scored seems impossible, but that's what we witnessed Sunday at Lumen Field.
A lot happened in Sunday's game. Here's what we learned:
Mike Evans is awesome
There's no better stat that illustrates Evans's impact on Sunday's game than this one: On San Francisco's go-ahead touchdown drive in the fourth quarter they were credited with 74 net yards. Evans on that drive had 75 receiving yards. Every time the 49ers needed a big play, Brock Purdy looked for No. 5 and Evans came through every time. He caught 7-of-10 targets for 113 yards and a touchdown. He also came through with a two-point conversion grab that put
San Francisco up three in the fourth quarter.
Huge win for NFC West standings
It's too early to look at division standings with any kind of intensity, but the victory was a big one early in the season for San Francisco from that standpoint. With the Los Angeles Rams set to host the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football, here's what the standings look like after Sunday's action:
- 49ers (5-0)
- Seahawks (3-2)
- Rams (2-2)
- Cardinals (1-4)
San Francisco has at least a two-game cushion on all three divisional opponents, and they hold the head-to-head tiebreaker going into their second matchups with each team. They're in a good spot with almost a third of the season down.
Run defense showed up
More on some specific players in a moment, but the 49ers run defense was outstanding in Seattle. The Seahawks managed just 89 rushing yards on 26 attempts Sunday, with just 68 of those yards coming from running backs on 24 carries. Seattle also managed just one explosive run and that came on a throw behind the line of scrimmage to WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba. It was an excellent showing from all three levels of the 49ers defense to get stops in an area they've struggled this season. Seattle spent a lot of time in second or third and long thanks in large part to the work of the run defense.
Sack party
We promise there's more coming on individual players in a second. The run defense that left Seattle off schedule on offense also allowed San Francisco's pass rush to get home for five sacks. They impacted even more plays than that with eight players getting credited with a quarterback hit. The last time San Francisco had five sacks in a game was Dec. 8, 2024 in a win over the Chicago Bears. They're up to 11 sacks this season − a number they didn't reach until Week 13 last year.
Young defenders shine
Okay, some specifics. There were a handful of awesome defensive performances from veterans Sunday. Fred Warner was his Hall of Fame self and Osa Odighizuwa was dominant, but a handful of players still on rookie contracts came up with big games. Here are their stat lines:
- DT Gracen Halton: 3 tackles, 1.0 sacks, 2 tackles for loss, forced fumble, fumble recovery, touchdown
- DL Keion White: 3 tackles, 1.0 sacks, 2 tackles for loss
- LB Jaden Dugger: 9 tackles, 1.0 sacks, tackle for loss
- CB Renardo Green: 1 tackles, 2 interceptions, 3 pass breakups
- S Malik Mustapha: 7 tackles, pass breakup, fumble recovery
There were things for each player that won't show up in a box score, but the biggest one is Mustapha who had a couple of bone-jarring hits and came up with the biggest stop of the day when he helped recover from Upton Stout's missed tackle to knock WR Cooper Kupp out of bounds short of the first down marker and seal a 49ers win.
Christian McCaffrey's sneaky big day
Sunday's game won't be on a list of the most productive games in McCaffrey's career, but it was full of hard-earned yards in a tough environment. McCaffrey racked up 68 rushing yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. His longest carry was 13 yards. It was just a consistently productive day on the ground for the star running back. He also pulled in all three of his targets for 15 yards. McCaffrey finished with 14 touches for 83 yards and a touchdown against an excellent Seahawks defense and the 49ers needed every one of them.
Brock Purdy keeps dealing
It wasn't Purdy's best game. In fact, it was his worst of the year through three quarters. He completed 12-of-21 throws for 113 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the first 45 minutes of game action. The switch flipped in the fourth quarter where he went seven-of-eight for 76 yards and a touchdown. He navigated a muddy pocket, delivered some big throws, and created with his legs on the 49ers' go-ahead touchdown and two-point conversion in that quarter. He wasn't his best all game, but he was his best when it counted when it looked like the game was going to get all away from San Francisco.
Won the turnover war
There were a whopping seven turnovers in Sunday's game, but the 49ers came out on top in the turnover margin. They turned four takeaways into 21 points, which helped them overcome a sloppy offensive day where they gave it away three times and allowed 17 points off those turnovers. San Francisco is now 47-7 under Kyle Shanahan when they win the turnover battle.
Deebo Samuel's scary injury
Samuel hurt his hamstring in the third quarter and was almost immediately ruled out after walking slowly to the sideline. He went down on the play like he was knocked out. He fumbled and even though he fell on top of the ball he wasn't able to recover the loose ball. That he was able to get up and walk off under his own power is good news. It remains to be seen how much time Samuel will miss, if any. If he's down the 49ers will be without Samuel, Ricky Pearsall, De'Zhaun Stribling and Demarcus Robinson in Week 6. There is a possibility Christian Kirk comes back off IR.
